The Yalta Conference/Causes of The Cold War
Yalta Conference
The Yalta Conference was in Yalta, Germany in 1944, it was between Allied leaders Joesph Stalin of the Soviet Union, Winston Churchill of Great Britain, and Franklin D. Roosevelt of the US. They discussed how to manage lands conquered by Germany during World War II.
Allied leaders discussed the future of Germany, Eastern Europe and the United Nations. France was the only country, other than the allies, included in postwar governing of Germany.
The US and Great Britain agreed that future governments of Eastern European Nations bordering the Soviet Union should be "friendly" to the Soviet Regime
The Soviet Union agreed to allow free elections in all territories liberated from Nazi Germany, this included the declaration of Poland.
Roosevelt felt that the conference reflected on the spirit of US-Soviet wartime cooperation carrying into post war time politics, this was short lived.
Causes of the Cold War
The Causes of the Cold war was mainly distrust between the Soviet Union and the United States.
The Russian Soviet Union wanted repercussions from Germany after WWII and a 'buffer' of friendly states to protect the USSR from being invaded again.
The United States and Great Britain wanted to protect democracy and help Germany to recover; they were worried that large areas of Eastern Europe were falling under soviet control.
Russian tension towards the US started when the US and Great Britain waited to open a front on france delaying them helping Russia on the Eastern front in WWII, this caused Russia to lose about 20 million citizens. The US also terminated their Lend-Lease aid to the Soviet Union before the war ended.
US tension started when Russia promised free elections in Eastern Europe and they didn't keep to their word and had a communist government instead.
Tension also was said to have started in WWII when the US dropped their atomic bomb on Hiroshima, this was said to have been a way to end the war but also an intimidation technique to frighten the Russians, it didn't work for intimidation but more so that Russia worked to get their own atomic bomb.
Western Democracies were hostile towards Communist states and this put heavy tensions into the war and as Winston Churchill stated an "Iron Curtain" on Europe.
